Your Complete Guide to Finding Jobs and Careers in Sweden

Sweden has vacancies open from Malmö and Gothenburg in the south to Stockholm, Uppsala, Umeå, Luleå and Kiruna in the north — at airports, in hospitals and elderly-care homes, on building sites, in warehouses, on farms and forests, in supermarkets and on the Stockholm tunnelbana.

See More Detail

A large share of Swedish jobs are practical roles with structured introduction programmes: cleaners, kitchen staff, pickers and packers, delivery drivers, care assistants and shop workers are recruited throughout the year. Licensed and qualified roles — truck driver, electrician, welder, assistant nurse, refrigeration technician or metro driver — pay considerably more and are among the most secure jobs in the country.

Sweden has no minimum wage set by law. Wages are agreed between unions and employers in collective agreements (kollektivavtal), which cover around nine in ten Swedish employees and set minimum rates for each industry. Every worker is entitled to 25 days of paid holiday a year under the Annual Leave Act, and many agreements add supplements for evenings, nights and weekends known as OB-tillägg.

This guide walks you through the sectors and regions hiring now, the job titles to search, realistic pay for each role in Swedish kronor, who can apply, how the work-permit rules for non-EU citizens work in 2026, the documents you need, and how to avoid fake job offers. A genuine Swedish employer never asks you to pay to be hired.

Why 2026 Is a Good Time to Look for Work in Sweden

Sweden has a persistent shortage of people in elderly care, healthcare, construction trades, heavy transport and industrial maintenance. Municipalities and regions need assistant nurses and care workers as the population grows older, large housing and infrastructure projects need electricians, plumbers and carpenters, and the green-industry investments in Norrbotten and Västerbotten — fossil-free steel, mining and energy — have created demand for welders, technicians and drivers in the north.

At the same time, tourism and seasonal work offer quick routes into the labour market. Mountain resorts such as Åre, Sälen and Riksgränsen hire for the winter, while the west coast, Gotland and the Stockholm archipelago need hotel and restaurant staff every summer. Fruit, vegetable and berry harvests in Skåne and the forests of Norrland add thousands of short-term jobs from June to October.

Sectors Hiring Right Now Across Sweden

Here is a sector-by-sector guide to Swedish hiring in 2026, with the job titles to use in your searches and the parts of the country where each kind of work is strongest.

Airport Jobs

Roles in demand: Airport Security Officer, Ramp Support Crew, Baggage Handler, Airport Cleaner, Ground Support Staff.

State-owned Swedavia operates ten of Sweden’s main airports, including Stockholm Arlanda, Göteborg Landvetter, Malmö, Luleå, Umeå, Kiruna, Åre Östersund and Visby. Security screeners are employed by contracted security companies and must pass background checks and certified aviation-security training. Ground-handling firms hire ramp crew and baggage handlers who load aircraft and de-ice them through the long winter, and terminal cleaning and passenger-assistance teams work around the clock at Arlanda.

Driving Jobs

Roles in demand: Truck Driver, Parcel Driver, Delivery Driver, Bus Driver, Personal Driver.

Truck drivers need a C or CE licence plus the professional driver competence (YKB) and are wanted by hauliers, timber transporters and grocery wholesalers, especially around Jönköping, Gothenburg, Örebro and the northern mining towns. Parcel and delivery drivers with a B licence work for courier and e-commerce networks in every city. Bus operators in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Skåne train new drivers for the D licence, and companies and embassies in Stockholm employ personal drivers.

Construction Jobs

Roles in demand: Construction Worker, Electrician, Plumber, Carpenter, General Labourer.

Housing, railway, road and industrial projects keep Swedish builders busy in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Uppsala and the expanding northern towns of Luleå, Boden and Kiruna, where parts of Kiruna town centre are being relocated because of mining. Every worker on site must be registered in the ID06 system and carry the ID06 card. Electricians need authorisation from the Swedish electrical safety board for independent work, and carpenters and concrete workers are often paid partly on piece-rate agreements.

Hotel & Hospitality Jobs

Roles in demand: Hotel Cleaner, Housekeeping Staff, Kitchen Helper, Waiter, Food Service Worker.

Stockholm and Gothenburg hotels hire all year, while seasonal destinations — Åre, Sälen and Vemdalen for skiing, the Bohuslän coast, Öland, Gotland and the Stockholm archipelago for summer, and the Icehotel area near Kiruna in winter — recruit large seasonal teams. Many mountain and coastal employers offer staff housing, and the hotel and restaurant agreement sets OB supplements for late and weekend shifts.

Agriculture & Farm Jobs

Roles in demand: Dairy Farm Worker, Fruit Picker, Farm Worker, Polyhouse Worker, Livestock Worker.

Skåne is Sweden’s farming heartland, with apple orchards around Kivik, vegetable and sugar-beet farms, and greenhouse growers producing tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs. Dairy farms in Halland, Västra Götaland, Jämtland and Västerbotten use modern milking robots and need livestock workers year-round. In late summer, wild-berry picking for blueberries and lingonberries takes place in the forests of Norrland and Dalarna; seasonal workers from outside the EU need a seasonal work permit issued by Migrationsverket.

Healthcare Jobs

Roles in demand: Healthcare Assistant, Support Worker, Aged Care Worker, Caregiver.

Municipal elderly care, regional hospitals and private care providers are among Sweden’s biggest employers. Since 2023, assistant nurse (undersköterska) has been a protected professional title that requires registration with the National Board of Health and Welfare. Care assistants (vårdbiträde) and personal assistants supporting people with disabilities can often start with an introduction course, and many municipalities combine work with Swedish language training for newcomers.

Cleaning Jobs

Roles in demand: Commercial Cleaner, Office Cleaner, Hotel Cleaner, Industrial Cleaner.

Facility-service companies clean offices, shopping centres, hospitals, schools, trains and hotels in every Swedish city. Cleaning is a common first job because many shifts start early or late and need limited Swedish, and the cleaning collective agreement sets fair minimum rates. Industrial cleaners in steelworks, paper mills and food factories earn more thanks to shift supplements and specialist equipment.

Factory & Manufacturing Jobs

Roles in demand: Garment Factory Worker, Production Worker, Packaging Worker, Warehouse Worker.

Sweden’s manufacturing belt includes vehicle and engineering plants in Gothenburg, Södertälje, Trollhättan and Umeå, steel and mining industry in Luleå, Borlänge and Sandviken, food processing in Skåne and Halland, and textile and e-commerce companies around Borås, the traditional home of Swedish textiles. Production lines run in rotating shifts with clear OB supplements.

Warehouse & Logistics Jobs

Roles in demand: Warehouse Worker, Picker/Packer, Forklift Operator, Logistics Assistant.

The logistics triangle of Jönköping, Gothenburg and Örebro, together with Eskilstuna, Norrköping, Borås and the Stockholm suburbs, is home to large retail, grocery and e-commerce distribution centres. Forklift operators need a recognised truck licence (truckkort), and pickers work with handheld scanners or voice-picking systems. Hiring peaks before Black Friday and Christmas.

Skilled Trade Jobs

Roles in demand: Electrician, Welder, Mechanic, HVAC Technician, Plumber.

Certified welders are needed in shipbuilding at Karlskrona, in heavy industry in Luleå and in engineering plants nationwide. Vehicle and heavy-machinery mechanics are wanted by bus depots, mining companies and dealerships, and Sweden’s heat-pump and district-heating systems create strong demand for refrigeration and HVAC technicians and plumbers. Many of these roles pay above the work-permit threshold, which makes them realistic options for skilled non-EU applicants.

Supermarket and Retail Jobs

Roles in demand: Cashier, Shelf Stacker, Store Assistant, Deli & Bakery Counter Staff, Store Supervisor.

Grocery chains, discount stores, furniture and fashion retailers employ staff in every town, with long opening hours that create plenty of part-time evening and weekend work. The retail agreement pays OB supplements for evenings, Saturdays and Sundays, which can lift monthly earnings noticeably.

Metro Jobs

Roles in demand: Metro Train Operator, Station Assistant, Customer Service & Ticket Agent, Track & Maintenance Technician.

Stockholm’s tunnelbana is Sweden’s only metro system, run on behalf of SL (Stockholm public transport) by contracted operators such as MTR Nordic. New lines to Nacka, Barkarby and Arenastaden are under construction, adding vacancies for train drivers, station staff, ticket inspectors and track technicians. Gothenburg, Norrköping and Lund run tram networks, and the national rail operator SJ also recruits drivers and on-board staff.

Who Can Apply — Eligibility

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can work in Sweden without a permit and register with Skatteverket to receive a personal identity number (personnummer) if they will stay for at least a year. Most full-time employers expect you to be 18 or older. English is widely spoken, so many warehouse, cleaning, construction and kitchen jobs can be started without Swedish, but the language is usually required in healthcare, elderly care and customer-facing roles.

Non-EU citizens need a work permit from Migrationsverket before they start working. The job must follow the relevant collective agreement or industry practice, include insurance, and — from 1 June 2026 — pay at least 90 per cent of the Swedish median salary, which is around SEK 34,470 a month (see the official salary requirement for a work permit). In practice this means many entry-level jobs are not open to new non-EU applicants, while skilled trades, licensed drivers and some technical roles can qualify. Seasonal work in agriculture, forestry and berry picking has its own permit rules for stays of up to six months.

Sector Who It Suits Typical Requirement Where to Apply
Airport Shift workers who like a busy environment Background check and aviation-security training for screening roles Swedavia and ground-handling companies
Driving Licensed, independent workers B licence for delivery; C/CE or D licence plus YKB Hauliers, couriers, bus operators

Agriculture Outdoor and seasonal workers Fitness for physical work; seasonal permit for non-EU workers Farms, orchards, berry companies
Healthcare & Care Caring, patient people Assistant-nurse registration or care training; Swedish required Municipalities, regions, private care

Factory & Manufacturing Workers comfortable with rotating shifts Safety introduction given on site Manufacturers and staffing agencies
Warehouse & Logistics Active, organised workers Truck licence (truckkort) for forklift roles Distribution centres and agencies
Skilled Trades Certified tradespeople Recognised qualification; welding or refrigeration certificates Industry, contractors, workshops
Supermarket & Retail Customer-friendly workers Swedish preferred; till training provided Retail chain careers pages
Metro Safety-minded, responsible workers Medical and aptitude tests; paid training SL contractors and rail operators

⭐ APPLY ONLY THROUGH OFFICIAL SERVICES OR ESTABLISHED EMPLOYERS.
Platsbanken (Arbetsförmedlingen) (the Swedish Public Employment Service), employer careers pages and authorised staffing companies such as Adecco Sweden, Manpower Sweden and Randstad Sweden are the safest places to apply. Swedish employers do not charge job-seekers, and a work permit can only be granted by Migrationsverket — nobody can sell you one. If anyone asks you to pay for a Swedish job or permit, stop and report it to the Swedish Police.

Information & Documents Commonly Required

  • A valid passport or EU national ID card.
  • A Swedish personal identity number or coordination number from Skatteverket.
  • For non-EU workers: a job offer that meets the collective-agreement and salary requirements, and an approved work permit from Migrationsverket.
  • A Swedish-style CV (one to two pages) and a personal letter (personligt brev) explaining why you suit the job.
  • Job-specific documents: driving licence and YKB, ID06 card, truck licence, welding or refrigeration certificates, assistant-nurse registration.
  • A Swedish bank account and BankID for salary payments and digital services.
  • References from previous employers.
  • Proof of address once you have found somewhere to live.

Wellness allowances (friskvårdsbidrag), subsidised lunches and staff discounts are common extras.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Jobs in Sweden

1
Check your work rights. EU citizens can apply directly. Non-EU applicants should focus on jobs that meet the salary requirement for a work permit, such as skilled trades, licensed driving and technical roles, or on seasonal permits.
2
Choose your sector and region. Match your skills to where demand is strongest — for example logistics in Jönköping, care in Stockholm, mining-related trades in Norrbotten, or ski-season hotel work in Åre.
3
Write a Swedish-style CV and personal letter. Keep the CV short and factual, list licences and certificates clearly, and use the personal letter to explain your motivation.
4
Search on official and trusted sites. Use Platsbanken (Arbetsförmedlingen), Arbetsförmedlingen in English and LinkedIn Jobs, and register with staffing companies such as Manpower Sweden, Randstad Sweden or Adecco Sweden.
5
Interview and agree terms. Interviews are relaxed but thorough. Ask which collective agreement applies, the monthly pay, OB supplements and the length of the contract.
6
Apply for your work permit (non-EU workers). Your employer creates the offer in Migrationsverket’s system and you complete the application online. Wait for the decision before travelling to start work.
7
Start work and register. Register with Skatteverket for a personal identity number, open a bank account, get BankID, and keep your payslips. Never pay anyone for a Swedish job.

Where to Find Official Swedish Job Openings

  • Platsbanken (Arbetsförmedlingen) — Sweden’s largest official job database.
  • Arbetsförmedlingen in English — English guidance from the Public Employment Service.
  • Migrationsverket — official work-permit information and online applications.
  • Skatteverket — personal identity numbers and income tax.
  • sweden.se — the official guide to working and living in Sweden.
  • Swedavia, SL (Stockholm public transport) and SJ — airport, metro and rail employers and operators.
  • LinkedIn Jobs — thousands of Swedish vacancies, many in English.
  • Adecco Sweden, Manpower Sweden and Randstad Sweden — staffing companies with branches nationwide.

Employee Benefits & Training Programs

  • Paid holiday: At least 25 days a year, with four consecutive weeks usually taken in summer.
  • OB supplements: Extra pay for evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Occupational pension: Employer pension contributions under most collective agreements.
  • Parental leave: 480 days per child, paid largely through Försäkringskassan.
  • Wellness allowance: Many employers pay towards gym memberships and sports.
  • Training: Paid introduction, safety courses, truck licences and Swedish lessons for newcomers.
  • Accommodation: Staff housing in many ski resorts, coastal hotels and remote northern jobs.

Worked Example

Lukas, 34, is a certified welder from Poland, so as an EU citizen he can work in Sweden without a permit. He searches Platsbanken (Arbetsförmedlingen) and finds a role with an engineering contractor in Luleå that supplies the region’s new industrial projects. The offer pays SEK 38,000 a month under the engineering collective agreement, with shift supplements and help finding an apartment.

He registers with Skatteverket, receives his personal identity number and opens a bank account with BankID. Within a year his employer pays for an advanced welding certificate that raises his pay again. At no point was he asked to pay for the job — exactly as it should be in Sweden.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Paying an agent for a Swedish work permit or “guaranteed” job — only Migrationsverket grants permits.
  • Accepting a non-EU job offer that pays below the permit salary requirement, which will be refused.
  • Starting work before the permit decision — this can lead to a ban on future permits.
  • Ignoring the collective agreement — always ask which kollektivavtal applies.
  • Underestimating housing shortages in Stockholm and Gothenburg — arrange accommodation early.
  • Skipping the personal letter, which Swedish employers expect alongside your CV.

Your Rights & Staying Safe from Job Scams

All workers in Sweden have the same legal protection, regardless of nationality: pay in line with the collective agreement, regulated working hours, paid holiday, sick pay and a safe workplace supervised by the Swedish Work Environment Authority. You have the right to join a trade union, and the LO trade union confederation and its member unions can help with pay disputes and contracts.

Fraudsters often target people abroad with fake Swedish job offers, especially in berry picking, cleaning and construction. Warning signs include demands for money for a permit or flight, contracts without a named Swedish company, and pressure to travel before a permit is granted. Check the employer and the permit status yourself, and report fraud or exploitation to the Swedish Police.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2026 a good year to look for jobs in Sweden?
Yes, especially in elderly care, healthcare, construction trades, transport, industrial maintenance and seasonal tourism. Northern Sweden’s industrial projects add many skilled jobs.
What is the minimum wage in Sweden?
Sweden has no legal minimum wage. Collective agreements set minimum rates for each industry; entry jobs typically pay SEK 24,500–29,500 a month before tax.
Can foreigners work in Sweden?
EU citizens can work freely. Non-EU citizens need a work permit, and from 1 June 2026 the salary must be at least 90% of the median wage (about SEK 34,470 a month). Seasonal permits exist for farm and forest work.
Do I need to speak Swedish?
Not for every job. Many warehouse, cleaning, construction and kitchen roles accept English, but Swedish is required for healthcare, elderly care and most customer-facing jobs.
Which Swedish cities have the most jobs?
Stockholm has the most vacancies, followed by Gothenburg, Malmö and Uppsala. Northern towns such as Luleå, Kiruna and Umeå offer well-paid industrial and construction work.
Do seasonal jobs include accommodation?
Often. Ski resorts in Åre and Sälen, coastal hotels and berry companies commonly provide housing, sometimes deducted from pay. Always get the cost in writing.
How long does a Swedish work permit take?
It depends on the employer and the case; certified employers often get faster decisions, while others may wait several months. Apply as early as possible through Migrationsverket.
Where can I apply safely?
Use Platsbanken (Arbetsförmedlingen), LinkedIn Jobs, employer careers pages and established staffing companies. Never pay to apply.

Conclusion

Jobs in Sweden in 2026 range from Arlanda Airport and the Stockholm tunnelbana to vehicle plants in Gothenburg, greenhouses and orchards in Skåne, warehouses in Jönköping, care homes in every municipality, mines and steelworks in Norrbotten, and ski resorts in Åre and Sälen. Understand the permit rules, choose the sector that fits your skills, apply only through official channels and established agencies, and never pay to be hired. Sweden offers fair pay, strong worker protection and a healthy work-life balance to those who prepare well.

👉 Next step: Search current vacancies on Platsbanken (Arbetsförmedlingen) or LinkedIn Jobs, and if you are a non-EU citizen, read the latest salary requirement for a work permit on Migrationsverket before you apply.
